Research in health psychology seeks, ultimately, to improve health. For example, Anderson and colleagues (1997) sought to change the supermarket food purchases of shoppers to improve nutritional outcomes. Shoppers were offered a multi-media education package covering various aspects of nutrition and their supermarket dockets were used to assess pre-post differences in measures such as fibre and fat content of food and purchases of fruit and vegetables. In this example, the researcher has defined the problem, designed the intervention and determined the indicators of effective change. In other words, the research activities and outcomes were totally researcher driven and controlled.
