When Caroline, whom we met earlier, walked into the counsellor's office and glanced nervously at the surroundings, the room seemed normal enough, with a light, quiet atmosphere. She noticed fresh flowers, pictures on the wall of stars and galaxies, a collection of ornamental stones and sea shells and, in the centre of the room, two armchairs facing each other. There was nothing very threatening here. She relaxed a little.
Caroline was in her mid-forties. She was thin and walked with stooped shoulders. Her face carried a look of despair, deeply etched by years of anxiety, countless failures and, more recently, separation from her husband followed by a divorce.
