Franco is a 9-year-old who has a long-standing diagnosis of Sotos syndrome with many behavioral features similar to autism. Sotos is a genetic disorder marked by large stature, intellectual disabilities, speech and language disorders, and weak muscle tone. A recent psychological evaluation showed that his current intellectual functioning is consistent with severe to profound intellectual disabilities. In addition, Franco has significantly delayed speech and language. He currently uses 16 understandable spoken words. His receptive vocabulary appears to be more advanced than his expressive vocabulary.
