Cancer patients are living longer, with roughly 50% to 60% of those diagnosed surviving up to 5 years or more, depending on the stage, type of disease, and sociodemographic factors (American Cancer Society [ACS], 2004b). In addition to medical advances in anticancer therapies (e.g., multidrug chemotherapy, bone marrow transplantation), this has also been accomplished in part by increased cancer screening, surveillance, and prevention efforts, which have led to earlier-stage diagnoses and more treatable conditions (ACS, 2004a).
