If social work students are to flourish in their careers, and go beyond a basic sense of ‘competence’ in practice, it is essential to develop a sense of Professional Self. This book will help students develop critical understanding of their own social work practice, and the tools and skills required to become a professional social worker.

Working with the Media
Introduction
This chapter reflects on how the media has related to and depicted social work. This has not generally been a positive experience for social work or social workers. However, because the print, radio and television media comments and commentaries have impact, and now social media and the internet more generally should be added as having influence, there is a role and requirement for social workers to engage with the media and to seek to have the contribution and realities of social work recognised. Based on the author's experience of media contacts and contributions, the chapter shares some learning on how to seek to work proactively as well as reactively with the media.
