Introduction
The title of this book and, indeed, the title of this introductory chapter are not without controversy, as the epigraph at the start of this chapter suggests. The term is contested in multiple ways. Professional social work suggests there is such a thing as ‘professional’ social work, and that it must be distinct from ‘unprofessional’ social work.
