Very few people in the United States are untouched by divorce these days, if not by personal, firsthand experience, then through the experiences of a close friend or family member. The upsurge in divorce rates over the last three decades has affected 3 million people annually and currently involves half of all marriages. Demographic estimates suggest that approximately 40% of white children and 75% of African American children will experience their parents' divorce by age 16 (Bumpass, 1984).
