Young people, in the flower of their youth, beauty and energy, are very much sexual beings. They are likely to be physically, although not necessarily emotionally, ready for sex. In the cognitive domain, recent brain research suggests that their decision making capacities are often still ‘a work in progress’ and, in situations of high arousal, those capacities are likely to be even less reliable. Additionally, sexual behaviour among teenagers may well occur in contexts that are risky, ill-advised or downright dangerous – for example, when under the influence of drugs or alcohol, in situations of strong peer or partner pressure and among groups where there are high rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
