Developed in three stages, this theoretical chapter argues that the textual representation of organization theory reflects a system of intellectual self-imprisonment. In Part 1 (Context), we suggest that within organization theory, attempts by the proponents of radical separatism to release themselves from such confinement have resulted only in their conceptual recapture. Drawing upon Cooper's (1990) development of the notions of undecidability and zero degree—from his thesis on organization/disorganization—we contend that this was inevitable, given that radical separatism failed to break with the conventions of representation within orthodox, systems-based organizational analysis.
