We are living in a simulacral society (Baudrillard, 1983), a neocapitalist cybernetic order constructed from signs and simulations, from models that are inherently self-referential. Reality is continuously overtaken by its images (Baudrillard, 1975) and ruled by indeterminacy. When reality is increasingly simulated for people, hyperreality emerges. This hyperreality is currently constructed by powerful media and other cultural sources. As a consequence, managers and other citizens lose the ability to distinguish between simulations and reality; yet this ability to distinguish imaginary from real is a precondition of all social criticism and hence for any attempts to reconstruct and legitimate the state and organizations, and thus to achieve a brighter future.
