I understand the postmodern project as an attempt to delegitimize the grand narrative forms of social science (Lyotard, 1979/1984) and, concomitantly, to legitimize local narratives of multiple self-identified marginal groups, for example, by race, ethnicity, gender, and social class. Special attention is given to the heretofore ignored views of historically oppressed parties. Delegitimation is accomplished by showing how all knowledge claims are rooted in the unique histories and cultures of their proponents, rather than in representations of universally objective truth.
