Chapter 1 draws on the international definition of social work (Topss UK Partnership, 2002) to consider the impact of social work reviews on social work roles (and by implication, on how social workers' opportunities for CPD are determined). The chapter compares the four country-specific social work PQ frameworks for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales that replaced a UK-wide framework, and discusses possible impediments to establishing PQ frameworks as flagships.
