Forty classroom-ready science teaching and learning activities for elementary and middle school teachersGrounded in theory and best-practices research, this practical text provides elementary and middle school teachers with 40 place-based activities that will help them to make science learning relevant to their students. This text provides teachers with both a rationale and a set of strategies and activities for teaching science in a local context to help students engage with science learning and come to understand the importance of science in their everyday lives.
Part I: Activities to Promote Place-Based Science Teaching in the Classroom
Look back at Figure P.1 on page xix where we presented to idea of place-based science as a series of concentric circles, with the classroom in the center and the circles extending out into the broader community. We begin in the science classroom, the site of traditionally distant and removed science learning, and consider instead a model of science learning that recognizes both the importance and the intrinsic interest that comes from studying place-based science. Themes and activities that will be studied beyond the classroom in the later parts of this book can be grounded in and supported by classroom activities.
