This chapter focuses on science in the neighborhood, when the transportation needed for a traditional field trip is not possible but when students are able to take walking trips in the neighborhood. Students can discover that there is still a lot of exploring to be done on foot in one's neighborhood. While the advantage of more traditional field trips (discussed in Part V) is that it allows students to participate in memorable activities that might otherwise be beyond their experience, the value of studying science in the neighborhood is that it allows for ongoing studies and projects that take place over multiple visits.
