The health benefits of being physically active in adulthood are well known. The evidence suggests that being a physically active adult can help in both the prevention and treatment of many common, but serious, health conditions such as high blood pressure, poor blood lipid profile, insulin resistance, obesity and some forms of cancer (US Department of Health and Human Services,1997). While the evidence supports the goal of encouraging all adults to be physically active on a daily basis, whether children can enjoy the same health benefits from being physically active has been the subject of much debate.
