In what ways are you more like your mother than your father? This question occurred to me as a teenager when I noticed that my sister and father shared certain personality traits, whereas my mother and I were similar in other ways. For example, my sister and father were usually easygoing and relatively unflappable when challenged by life's frustrations and disappointments. Their favorite phrase at such times was, “This, too, shall pass.” In contrast, my mother and I tended to overreact to these same challenges as if they were impending catastrophes.
