Counselling ‘skills’ courses are much shorter than professional Diploma level courses. The main difference between the two is that ‘skills’ courses do not provide the amount of training necessary to practise as a counsellor, though the quality of that training will be of just as high a standard. Counselling skills courses may be of any duration from a IS-hour introductory weekend through a short 30-hour module run, perhaps, on the basis of a 3-hour evening session for 10 weeks, up to a full Certificate Course in Counselling Skills, usually of 120 hours duration if it is of university standard.
