Introduction
In Chapter 4 we argued there were two fundamental learning processes (the reflective and the social) that need to be engaged in order to improve performance. These two processes are constantly in operation in the workplace but without some structuring their content and the quality of their outcomes will be variable. We have also indicated that schools are a relatively impoverished setting for adult learning, and both custom and working conditions do not make it easy for individual teachers to improve their practice. The habit of providing professional development off-site and ignoring the school as a learning environment for adults compounds these problems. How, then, should schools shape these processes to support improvement in performance?
