Elliott Durham is a mixed comprehensive school for some 460 11 to 16-year-old pupils taught by 30 teachers. It serves St Ann's, a disadvantaged inner-city ward in Nottingham (UK). Sixty-three per cent of the pupils are eligible for free school meals, 60 per cent are from single-parent families, 40 per cent are on the school's special educational needs register and over 80 per cent enter the school with reading ages below their chronological age (OFSTED, 1998).
