Analysis of the chemical composition of firecrackers has shown that highly toxic substances are present in significant quantities, which are released into the environment when the crackers are burst. These include:

  • Copper: Can be poisonous if ingested by humans. Inhalation of copper dust and fumes causes irritation of the respiratory tract.
  • Cadmium: Inhalation or ingestion of cadmium can damage the kidneys and cause anaemia. It is a potential carcinogen.
  • Lead: Can affect the central nervous system and cause cancer of the lungs and kidneys if inhaled. Young children can suffer mental retardation and brain damage if exposed to lead.
