Key functions of organizations include (a) promoting social cohesion among members and (b) coordinating the efforts of multiple individuals in a manner capable of achieving objectives. Observers and managers of organizations require an understanding of how organizations achieve the required cohesion and coordination.
Two basic mechanisms are important in enabling organizations to do this. The first mechanism is a system of roles. Adopting the familiar theatrical term, social scientists designate as a social role the acts, communication linkages, and ways of thinking a person is expected to adopt in a primary group or organization.
