Consider that since the end of World War II, the human population has grown from about 2 billion to more than 5 billion (Keyfitz, 1989), the global economy has grown more than 15-fold (World Bank, 1992), consumption of fossil fuels has increased by a factor of 25 (Brown, Kane, & Roodman, 1994), and industrial production has increased by a factor of 40 (Schmidheiny, 1992).
