If one wants a theme linking all the topics treated in this book on organizational aesthetics, it can be found in a metaphor of which I am especially fond, and which I have taken from visual cultures: the metaphor of the organization as a hypertext (Strati, 1996b, 1997). This is a metaphor based on information technology and on computer graphics, and one which the reader will grasp immediately if he or she thinks back to the computer simulation of the chair discussed in Chapter 1: change a parameter and you have a different chair, change another one and you have yet another chair, until you forget what the original chair was like and are perhaps even unsure whether one actually existed.
