The expansion of ordinary television under the rubric of infotainment has led to certain discourses, which had had important legitimating roles under the previous regime, having to be minimized because they militated against entertainment. Chief among these was education, once a key member of the ‘inform, educate and entertain’ triumvirate. Jeremy Tunstall's attempt to re-insert education in the portmanteau replacement term through the coinage ‘edinfotainment’ to refer to programmes like BBC's Tonight and Antiques Roadshow did not even survive to the end of the chapter in which it was introduced (1993: 80–2).
