In this multidisciplinary portrait of men and their concerns in later life, the contributors use both a life course and gendered perspective to point out that the image and self-image of men are continually reconstructed throughout the life cycle. Issues examined include: the position of older men in society and the changes wrought in their status and roles over time; men's relationships to spouse, children, grandchildren and friends; and policy implications.

Older men's1 self-perceptions and lived experience are affected by several transitions associated with the physiological aging process and the social rhythms of the life career (e.g., retirement, grandfatherhood, widowhood). Because sexuality represents one of the key life domains typically affected by the aging process, we examine aspects of heterosexual men's sexuality during their later years of life.2

Our analysis of the transitional nature and significance of sexuality for older men is informed by social constructionist, symbolic interactionist, and life span perspectives (Gagnon & Simon, 1973; Plummer, 1982; Simon & Gagnon, 1986; Tiefer, 1987; Weeks, 1986).
