In this multidisciplinary portrait of men and their concerns in later life, the contributors use both a life course and gendered perspective to point out that the image and self-image of men are continually reconstructed throughout the life cycle. Issues examined include: the position of older men in society and the changes wrought in their status and roles over time; men's relationships to spouse, children, grandchildren and friends; and policy implications.

Only recently have men come to be seen as appropriate targets for family research, and their ties to wives, children, and parents, have taken precedence over those to brothers and sisters. Even for women, sibling ties have received scant attention (Bedford, 1989). Finding data about men's sibling relationships in general and old men's in particular is much like searching for the proverbial needle in the haystack. This chapter, then, is as much a discussion of important factors to consider in adult sibling ties as it is of brothers in old age.
