Designed for nurses and student nurses who work with this group, this book covers interventions for infants and children as clients, as well as the family as a client. Each chapter examines the theoretical and research literature support for the invention and links to appropriate nursing diagnoses and outcomes. A case study is presented to illustrate how each intervention is used in nursing practice. Implications for further research are presented with the goal of advancing nursing science by stimulating further study of nursing interventions.

The teen pregnancy rate in the United States is higher than that of all other developed nations, with approximately 11% of females ages 13 to 19 years becoming pregnant each year. Although the figure for males is much more difficult to track, it is estimated that up to 7% of teen males become fathers annually. The majority of teen parents are unmarried (Maynard, 1996; Moore, Driscoll, & Lindberg, 1998). In addition, more than half of all adolescents report having had sexual intercourse by the age of 19 years, and age at first intercourse continues to decline (Office of Technology Assessment [OTA], 1991b).
