  • Basic Conditioning Factors

    A spinal cord injury has major effects and results on integrated functioning of human beings. The basic conditioning factors serve as a guide for describing some of the basic operative influencing factors to be understood and considered in nursing of these patients.

    • Health state: Tetraplegia (quadriplegia) or paraplegia arising from trauma—commonly gunshot wounds or acts of violence, automobile and diving accidents, and neurological diseases. Degree and extent of injury varies with cord level of injury and whether it is complete or incomplete. Patients with injuries at C6 or above and C4–5 may be on mechanical ventilators with tracheostomy, medical complications, etc.
