The recent nursing shortage and dramatic shifts in the health system underscore the importance of gaining a better understanding of the dynamics of the workplace for nurses. This study has contributed to a better understanding of the dynamics of nurse employment among various health care industries. The nursing personnel shortage that occurred at the time of this study was a significant one. It not only occurred at a time of widespread increasing demand for registered nurses and other nursing personnel, but it also occurred in concert with changes in women's participation in the labor force. Changes in female career choices triggered a decline in enrollments in nursing education programs as well. While these trends are well documented for nursing personnel, similar patterns were exhibited among other, allied health professions.
