If we are to understand what determines the opportunities open to news sources to shape news agendas, we have to understand how certain institutions and structures regulate the flows of news information. In exploring this question we are also examining the features and processes beyond the newsroom which represent the political and economic environment in which news organisations operate. This chapter considers questions of power associated with the ownership of news organisations and the consequences for news information circulation of the positioning of news organisations in competitive markets.
