This chapter is not intended to provide an overview of media theory, or even a comprehensive account of theoretical debates with regard to news media. There are plenty of alternative texts that can provide a fuller treatment for these purposes. Rather, what this short chapter will attempt is to provide some indication of the theoretical positions that have helped to sharpen the focus of this book. Accordingly, there will be little discussion in this chapter of the ways in which content, representation or reception can be theorised, although such issues will be touched upon in Chapter 8.
