In the story told in Chapter 1, you may have been intrigued (even puzzled) by some specific question or response the counselor used. It is our task in this chapter to make more sense of these responses so that—if you find them appealing—you can learn to use them. We want to introduce you to a narrative approach to counseling in a step-by-step fashion. Any breaking down of a complex process into steps runs the risks of oversimplifying or falsely implying an inevitable linear progression. However, it also facilitates the learning process, as long as we keep in mind that there is really no foolproof recipe for the complexities of counseling conversation.
