The Oaktree Unit was part of a large urban hospital. The patients were elderly, frail and suffered from a wide range of conditions associated with old age, including senile dementia and Parkinson's disease. One part of the unit was a specially designated Stroke Rehabilitation Centre where people would stay as in-patients for six to eight weeks. During this time they would receive intensive rehabilitative care involving a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists and psychologists. Another part of the unit comprised a small day hospital which could be attended on a daily basis for continuing treatment, following discharge from the inpatient areas.
