The National Curriculum, Key Stage 1, Music, HMSO (1999) states that:
- Music is a powerful, unique form of communication that can change the way pupils feel, think and act.
- It brings together intellect and feeling and enables personal expression, reflection and emotional development.
- As an integral part of culture, past and present, it helps pupils understand themselves and relate to others, forging links between the home, school, and the wider world.
The National Curriculum, Music, states that:
Teaching should ensure that listening, and applying knowledge and understanding, are developed through the interrelated skills of performing, composing and appraising.
This is quite a tall order for Key Stage 1 teachers who are already burdened with the demands of the language, mathematics and science curriculum.
