Part One provides a useful introduction to some of the key issues associated with multicultural counselling. It contains two chapters. In Chapter 1, Lago and Thompson contend that racism has to be addressed and worked with by counsellors in training who plan to practise in today's multicultural society. However, this process could be an intensely painful experience. White groups, after training, may experience vast realms of guilt and impotence, while black people may get in touch with powerful emotions such as depression. Lago and Thompson then consider cross-racial counselling partnerships and the issues that arise for practice.
