It is important to develop effective classroom strategies to motivate learners, but strategies can be more effective if schools have a distinct learning ethos. An effective school is one with a learning ethos that is experienced and shared by all students and staff.
This chapter will describe the factors that contribute to an effective school by looking at:
- school climate and school ethos
- the role and development of emotional literacy
- the inclusive policies of a school, including the importance of values and community awareness
- whole-school programmes aimed at developing areas of learning such as thinking skills programmes, social awareness and self-esteem, such as Circle Time activities.
