Theoretical Origins

The term discourse analysis is used in various ways in the relevant literature (cf. Ehlich 1993: 145, 1994, Schlobinski 1996, Widdowson 1995). Similarly the term critical discourse analysis (hereafter CDA) is far from implying a homogeneous method within discourse analysis. Its general theoretical background, basic assumptions and overall goals may therefore be outlined, but its methodology can only be presented with reference to particular approaches and with regard to their specific theoretical backgrounds. Accordingly two approaches have been selected: critical discourse analysis in the form developed by Norman Fairclough, and the discourse-historical method of Ruth Wodak.
