The third section examines populations with special needs, including homeless people whose numbers have risen in recent years - due in part to their expulsion from institutional care. Finally, the volume discusses the future of mental health policy and practice, which will be influenced by technology and shifts in funding to manage
Introduction
Before we present discussion of today's major issues in the mental health field, we need to provide a foundation of basic information to establish a common frame of reference for the material that follows. In Chapter 1, James Callicutt presents data regarding the prevalence of mental illness in U.S. society, its costs, and how they are borne; he then describes the broad categories of services available for the treatment of mental illness.
In Chapter 2, Vikki Vandiver traces the historic shifts and vacillations of public interest from institutional to community approaches to mental health services, and sets the stage for much of the policy discussion incorporated in later chapters of the book.
