Really listening to young people is the most important way in which we can help pupils with mental health problems and also promote emotional health and well-being in schools. It is, of course, important to distinguish between the use of listening skills and counselling, which is a more specialised activity. All young people should be able to access counselling in schools as an entitlement, but the introduction of such a service needs to be thought through and many issues and practicalities explored.
