A key question is to what degree did reporters identify with the troops? Writing about the Falklands conflict, Morrison and Tumber stated:
The journalists not merely observed their subjects, but lived their lives and shared their experiences, and those experiences were of such emotional intensity that the form of prose which journalists use to take the reader into that experience – the ‘I was there’ form – provided not only a window for the reader, but also a door for partiality irrespective of any desire to remain the detached professional outsider.
