The second edition of Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man (1964) is far less a work of experimental collage and rhetorical juxtaposition, far less encyclopedic in its approach than The Gutenberg Galaxy. This was a direct consequence of McLuhan's editors at McGraw-Hill who refused the use of quotations for anything more than argumentative exposition. As we saw with The Gutenberg Galaxy and The Mechanical Bride, the use of quotation was a strategy to create interfaces with existing research and ideas.
