Prologue. On January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger lifted off on the 25th mission of NASA's shuttle program. Its voyage was tragically cut short by an explosion just 73 seconds into flight. Its seven crew members, including New Hampshire school teacher Christa McAuliffe, perished on impact as their crew cabin slammed into the Atlantic Ocean. The shock of the tragedy humbled a once-proud agency and was followed by months of investigations as a presidential commission searched for the cause.
