Training and Technological Change
Effective training is a vital element of successful technological change. As seen in the Good Health case described in Chapter 6, new technology usually alters job tasks and requires that employees learn new skills. All too often in technology adoption scenarios, though, training is an afterthought that is “too little and too late.” A more effective strategy is to build training into the overall technology and business strategy and offer it on the front end of the change process. Moreover, as this chapter will demonstrate, there is great value in planning and evaluating training jointly with the union (or with affected employees if there is no union present).
