At a recent conference a sociologist was complaining of the pervasive use of the word ‘strategy’ during the proceedings. His remarks came close to a paraphrase of Goering's irritation with culture: ‘when someone mentions strategy, I reach for my gun’. The episode illustrates the centrality of strategy to the field of organizational studies as well as its latent controversial power. The time is ripe therefore to take stock of the developments around what has become a core subject for social science in general. That the use of the word ‘strategy’, and its adjective ‘strategic’, has extended beyond managers and policy-makers to enter common parlance, makes the task all the more urgent.
