Mental illness describes a broad range of conditions such as schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, eating disorders, and anxiety disorders that afflict people of all ages. About one in four adults experiences a mental health disorder, which may be temporary, in a given year, and about one in 17 adults (6%) lives with a serious mental illness.
