Attempting to understand violent events is a complicated and tricky business for the researcher and the clinician, as well as for the actual participants. In our research, as no less than in our clinical work, we found that such attempts were met with resistance on the part of those participants who systematically suppressed all evaded memory of the violence because of emotional and cognitive difficulties. Survivors and perpetrators are faced with a seemingly contradictory task.
