Double Vision: 40 Years On
My 40–year campaign for comprehensive education has never resolved the double vision with which it began. My London comprehensive in the 1950s was:‘… a shining glass palace filled with excitement… school offered the means through which an effective mass democracy, free of ignorance and subservience, might emerge’ (Barker, 1986a, p. xiv). But it was also the place where I endured dreary, socially segregated lessons designed to thwart the democratic, egalitarian aspirations of parents, like mine, who chose all-ability schools for their children. Inspired by the potential, troubled by the reality, I decided to become a teacher, eager to help invent a democratic, community education for all our people.
