Tap into prior knowledge to support schema theory

Schema theory (Pearson, 1986), as mentioned earlier, is about comprehending what one reads. Based on the constructivist view of learning, schema theory states that the learner possesses an individually held, personal schema of things in his or her mind. This schema is constructed through the background knowledge and life experiences of the learner. Schema theory suggests that each reader brings a different schema to the reading, based on his or her background knowledge and life experiences. To read with comprehension, readers must somehow connect the incoming information with the existing scheme in their minds. They must make sense of the input based on what they already know.
