Before I attempted to probe into and hopefully reveal the hidden worlds of my pupils' minds there were some issues that I felt were essential to consider.

  • Why do we want to better understand those children who do not conform or who challenge authority?
  • What exactly do we mean by EBD and what theories help us to understand related behaviours?
  • How can we increase our understanding of the behaviour of children with EBD?
  • What are the nature, extent and impact of previous and current attempts at exploring the perceptions of children with EBD?

Some possible answers to these questions are briefly outlined.
