Andhra Pradesh with its unique history of Telangana-armed uprising and decades-long violent struggles by left-wing extremist groups has been selected for the detailed analysis of the genesis and growth of civil liberties organizations and NGOs and the extent of their contributions towards human rights movement. The state that is the fifth largest in India with 23 districts has three distinct geographical regions—Coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema and Telangana. This geographical identity coupled with various socio-economic-political and developmental issues paved the way for the demand for separate Telangana state.
